Encouraging Kids to Go Cycling

Cycling is a great exercise that can keep your kids active and healthy. If you want to encourage them to adapt an athletic lifestyle, you should start introducing them to cycling at a very young age. As early as two years old, give them a pushbike to get them started on the basics of steering and balance. When they are ready to start learning how to pedal, pick a training bike with the proper height (they should have no trouble getting on and off the bike, and they should be able to put both feet on the ground while on the bike).

Once they can finally ride on their own without the assistance of training wheels, take them on short biking trips with their friends or members of your family. Keep excursions short as kids tend to get bored easily. Choose a route that is scenic and will allow you to pass along interesting places such as parks or your local farmer's market. Be sure that you are familiar with your route. Losing your way will only take the fun out of the experience.

Before going on biking trips, make sure that you and your kids are dressed appropriately. Have everyone wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Furthermore, make sure everyone is wearing their helmets properly. In addition, there should also be an ample supply of healthy snacks and drinking water. Kids can easily go hungry and will feel discouraged to go on if they feel uncomfortable.

Most important, have fun and exude a sincere enthusiasm for cycling. Children can easily pick up on your emotions and will likely imitate your passion for cycling.
