Showing the Value of Saving Money to Your Child
It is quite challenging to teach your child how to save money. More often than not, the money you have given him will be spent immediately. However, if you are a wise parent, you must set a good example for your kid. This will be possible if you can show him the benefits of saving in several ways.
Basically, children will have to save money on their own. Hence, you can offer to put in a matching contribution as a way to encourage him to save more. You can propose to double the money every time he makes a move to save. Similarly, you can convince him to deposit part of his money in a savings account where you can track the interest earned. Another way is to give him a non-monetary savings reward, such as a sticker, a toy, or a special privilege like a day at the zoo. It can also help if you encourage him to identify fun things to spend his money on. For instance, you can hang a picture of the item he wants on the wall. This will surely remind him of what he is saving for.
Furthermore, try to save money in front of your child by keeping your own piggy bank or by depositing an amount in the bank when you are with him. By explaining what you are saving for, your kid will surely emulate your behaviour. At times, you can help him enjoy his money by spending some for small purchases or buying something he likes. Just do not forget to praise him for any amount saved and encourage him to keep saving his money.
